Description

A necklace of turquoise disc beads with twelve lapis lazuli beads spaced evenly and an Egyptian “heart” carnelian pendant at the center. The lapis beads are faced with vermeil (gilded silver) granulated ring beads. The pendant is 1.5 cm in height, 9.5 mm in width, and 6 mm in thickness. The drill hole diameter is 1.9 mm. The lapis lazuli beads are 3mm in length and 3.5 mm in width. The turquoise beads are 3 mm. The hand made beading tips and clasiep are vermeil. The lapis lazuli and turquoise beads are ancient beads from Afghanistan. All the lapis that was used in the jewelry of ancient Egypt had to come by trade or tribute from Afghanistan. The necklace contains the four colors that were favored in ancient Egyptian jewelry for their amuletic properties: light blue turquoise, dark blue lapis lazuli, red orange carnelian and gold. The carnelian pendant depicts a heart. The heart was thought to be the seat of the soul so the amulet is meant to protect the soul of the wearer.
